Bye to 2017 and a happy new year!

The Copenhagen Towers would like to send a big “Thank You” to all of our followers, fans, volunteers and all people interested in Towers Nation. At the same time we would like to wish you all the best for the upcoming year and a great football season in 2018!

Happy X-Mas, Tower nation

Mvh
Jakob, formand i Towers

Towers going to Mermaid Bowl XXVIII

mermaidbowl_logo16_hvid-700x357The Towers have qualified for the Mermaid Bowl for the third time in the past four seasons. We will face a familiar opponent; the Triangle Razorbacks in the championship game.

We earned a berth in the 28th installment of the Mermaid Bowl by winning 49-14 over the Amager Demons in the semifinal at Gentofte Sportspark.

The game will be played in Casa Arena in Horsens on Saturday, October 8th 2016. Kick-off is at 16:00. Prior to the big game several hundred youth players will play a youth tournament.

Tickets for the Mermaid Bowl are available from the organizers’ website.

The Copenhagen Towers FanClub has a Facebook group that will keep you updated on fan aspects of the game. They are organizing a fan bus to the game, so please check out the group, join it and register for the bus ride.

The Towers finished the National League regular season in first place with a 9-1 record. Our sole loss came at the hands of the Razorbacks on a Friday Night in Vejle before the summer break. On the other hand we beat the Razorbacks at home when we inaugurated our new stadium, so the Mermaid Bowl is bound to be exciting.

Ten Towers help Denmark beat Poland

The international friendly between Denmark and Poland in Gdansk turned out to be an exciting affair. In the end Denmark won by a score of 37-35.

After setting the tempo early, Denmark fell behind in the second half, but managed a come from behind win in the fourth quarter.

Towers WR Frederik Myrup was named MVP of the game after scoring Denmark’s two first touchdowns; a 50-yard swing pass followed by a 101-yard kick-off return.

In the third quarter WR Aske Troen caught a touchdown pass from QB Kasper Skyum. Being his usual busy self, S Magnus Bitsch blocked a 36-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter and recorded an interception in the third quarter.

We have received a post-game photo of our eight players and two coaches on the national team, courtesy of DAFF.

Eight Towers selected for Danish National Team

National Team head coach Lars Carlsen has published his 45-man roster for this weekend’s international friendly against Poland. Eight of the names are familiar to Towers fans.

Three defensive backs, two offensive linemen, two wide receivers and a quarterback make up the Towers’ contribution to the Danish squad in Poland:

Aske Troen, WR
Frederik Myrup, WR
Jens Møller, OL
Kasper Skyum, QB
Magnus Bitsch, DB
Oliver Zacho, DB
Rasmus Thejl, OL
Sverri Finsson, DB

Despite being just 25 years old, this season marks OL Jens Møller’s 10th anniversary on the Danish National Team. Since donning the red and white uniform of the U19 National Team for the first time in 2006, Jens has participated in three European championships, one Nordic championship, a four-nation tournament in Italy, a few international friendlies, and now another friendly in Poland.

“It is always a huge experience to have the privilege of playing for the Danish National Team, so I’m very happy every time I’m given the opportunity. Those games are just special,” Jens explains.

The Towers are tied with the Aarhus Tigers for the most players on the National Team roster. To Jens Møller, having seven teammates alongside him on the National Team sends a message: “I find it very positive that the Towers again and again provide so many players to the National Team. It goes to show what kind of program we have here”.

The National Team will take the field in Cetniewo, about 50 kms north of Gdansk, on Saturday, August 6th at 18.00 (6 p.m.) local time. The Danish American Football Federation is currently checking whether the game will be streamed. Check their website for more news.

Towers take seat on DAFF board

The Towers are very proud that our athletic director, Anders Munch Skovgren, was recently elected to a position on the board of DAFF.

Anders Munch has been a known and respected figure within Danish football since the mid 1990’s. When the entire board of DAFF stepped down earlier this summer, many clubs looked for a football knowledgeable, veteran presence on the new board. Anders’ name came up very quickly. He was asked to consider becoming a candidate and accepted after some thought and after consulting his family. Anders will serve on the board until the next regular annual conference at which time he will consider his position.

Towers U19 head coach Simon Sonnesen said it well: “The broadest shoulders carry the most weight”. That can be said of Anders himself and of the Towers as a whole.

Over the years, since hanging up his cleats after a long career as the QB of Frederikssund Oaks, Anders has served in countless club, federation and national team functions. He is never one to back away from responsibility and saw an opportunity to do good work for football in Denmark in general.

The Towers, similarly, are proud that our team management is thought of so highly and wish Anders all the best in his endeavors for the Danish American Football Federation.

Alongside his work for DAFF, Anders will remain the Towers athletic director and the QB coach of the National League team.

Spring season in the books

We have reached the summer break of the 2016 season in the Danish National League. The spring season was good to the Towers as we racked up a 6-1 record, signed a major sponsorship deal, broke in our new stadium and showed off new uniforms.

All in all, not bad..

We have played seven of the ten games in the regular season. Three at home, beating the Rebels, Demons and Razorbacks, while we played four road games, beating the Stallions, Rebels, Gold Diggers and losing to the Razorbacks.

We’re the top ranked offense in the league, scoring 266 points and also the top ranked defense, allowing only 76 point. That averages out to a score of 38-11 pr game. Our only loss came at the hands of the Razorbacks, who beat us 31-30 on a Saturday night in Vejle.

Early in the year we were very happy and proud to sign a sponsorship deal with AIRTOX International. It’s a deal that has helped and will help the Towers in a number of ways. Most visibly, our new uniforms bear AIRTOX’ logo on the backs of the jerseys and along the side of the right legs.

The new uniforms come with both purple and white jerseys. On the day the uniforms were shown off to fans and the public at large, our coaches and players had chosen all-white uniforms. It was a beautiful day and the uniforms looked great.

Add to that the fact that we beat the defending champions and broke in our new stadium in those new uniforms and it doesn’t get much better. Don’t forget to watch our highlight video from the game…!

Having been away from our regular stadium field for two years has been tough. But the newly renovated field, with new fan facilities, was worth waiting for. We had each of the 300 seats filled and a lot of fans standing, when we beat the Razorbacks. We couldn’t have asked for a better or louder home crowd. This bodes well for the future of Tower Nation.

Now the Summer break awaits. On August 16th at 14:00 (2 p.m.) we host the Aalborg 89ers. We hope to see all of our fans again then. Until then; thank you for being Towers fans and enjoy your summers.

Towers to show off brand new uniforms

Towers nye jerseysThe Towers will take the field in brand new uniforms in tomorrow’s homecoming game. Just in time for the big game, our Polish supplier delivered the uniforms at the doorstep – literally – of head coach Peter Herbild at 3 am last night.

As if the rematch against the Razorbacks tomorrow and the fact that we’re returning to our stadium field wasn’t enough to get excited about, we will show off our new uniforms tomorrow. And for the first time in about a decade we will have both purple and white jerseys.

Team manager Lene Schubert has announced that our fans will be treated to all-white uniforms tomorrow. So if you haven’t already signed up for the game, make sure to check our Facebook event and come out.
